News October 09

We do it again at Signie’s.

The September comp was held in warm clean conditions at Sign Posts on 13th beach on the 12-9-09.

With a big day of surfing and some warm stormy weather expected, the tents, pa, flags and Lazza’s BBQ were quickly set up and the first heat was in the water by 8am.

Once again there were some more new members keen to hit the water and as you will see in the results they can surf too. Simon Johnston showed good form to take out the open B division and Harry Royal had a second in the very competitive over 50’s. Basha’s mate Ron didn’t surf this comp due to some injury worries but hopefully he’s right for the next one. Chris Wiltshire had his second surf with us and had a ball by the look of it. He enjoyed the meal at the Zebra Bar too.

With a dropping tide, a left hander almost straight out from the sign post seemed to be the scoring wave. Lightenings a bit further down the beach was firing for a big part of the morning and I think some of the goofy footers would like to have moved down there for a while.

The peak shifted around quite a bit during the day and it paid to watch the heats before yours to try and get some idea of where it was.

Chris Meier put on a great display of modern longboarding with some big back hand power cut backs and great water knowledge to pick the peak at the right time.

The business end of the season is coming up and all heats and finals were hotly contested. With only 2 comps left every one is trying to get some good results.

The junior divisions had some great surfing on display with Ben Considine and Ginny Werner taking out there respective divisions.

Chris Meier and Dean Cook look to be doing well in their divisions but the other placing’s still look to be open. Over 50’s is getting interesting with multiple winners so far, and as mentioned before the open B had a new winner in Simon Johnston, a new member. Should shake things up a bit.

After a warm day on the beach it was off to a new venue, the Zebra Bar for the preso’s. With a few cold frothies and some complimentary chips a good days surfing was rapt up. Sounds like groups of people had dinner at various venues around town and then came back to the Zebra Bar to see Steve Messina and his band rock out a few numbers. Apparently there were also some sightings of our members even later on at the Ocean Grove Footy club helping them celebrate there 2 grand final wins. All had very sore heads the next day(s) according to sources.

Don’t forget East takes on West (Maladiction v SOUL) November 7th. Stay over at East Coast the Sat night. Let Brian know if you can make it.

Next comp is October 17th. Meet Ocean Grove main beach 7am.
