Old Mals Rule at the August Comp
Once again we ran the Annual Old Mal Division for the August comp. This is sponsored by Murf’s Surf Shop each year and is starting to look as though it might have to be renamed the Darren Murphy perpetual trophy.
The comp was held at Signies on 13th beach and at times during the day it was almost perfect for the old and new boards. The left hander was the better quality wave on the day and the mainly left hand break of Lightning’s a bit further down the beach was providing some good free surfing.
Some of our members are away at the Australian longboard Titles in Port Macquarie but there were still about 40 punters who turned out on the day to try their luck.
Some beautiful old boards were shown the sunlight and some great surfing took place on them too. These old boards are very different to ride than their modern counterparts and the style and finesse shown by the guys who ride them all the time stood out on the day.
Chooka had his beautifully restored Midget Farraley humming through the water.
Darren Murphy-AKA-Murf was once again the winner of the perpetual Old Mal Trophy, with the ever stylish Lee Considine second. Murf really put on a great display of how to ride on of these boards and performed big fade turns and nose riding with seeming ease.
The Trad final saw great surfing with Tim Edwards taking it out from Chad and Ben Considine. Chad really gets the spray flying when he digs in on some of his big turns. Ben has been chosen to go to the High Performance camp at Casuarina Beach in the next school holidays, so look out after that as he is already racking up the wins and places now.
Chris Meier showed his talent by snapping some big cut backs and snaps in waves that really didn’t have a great deal of power. He won the over 40’s.
Dave Arter won his heat with some really good hard charging surfing and ended up placing 5th in the final.
Don’t forget to see how our members are doing at the Aussie’s. You can find the web link through the Surfing Australia web site.
Next comp is now the 12th of September. Meet Ocean Grove Main Beach 7am.
