A SUNNY START FOR THE YEAR
Finally we copped some good weather for a comp. We were greeted with off shore winds, a warm sunny day and a small swell. All the prayers to Huey and chicken sacrifices must have worked, for a change.
The decision was made to run the comp at Ocean Grove on the strength of the 1.5 meter swell predictions and the already half full car parks along 13th beach. Unfortunately the swell didn’t arrive in time for the comp.
There were about 50 surfers lined up and ready to go, so with that many heats and the newly introduced repercharge category to get through, the first heat hit the water at 8 am sharp.
Once again there were a number of new club members (Danny and Jack Malone, Russell Synot and Tama) having a surf with the club and at least one member (Julian Thompson) coming back after a year or so off.
Open B had a lot of action going on and it was great to see a long time supporter of the club, Ian Coggins, come away with a well earned victory. He caught 13 waves in his first heat apparently!!!
Open A was hotly contested as usual, and Cookies smooth style payed off in the small conditions. Well done to Myles Fletcher for his 3rd place in the A grade.
Chris Meier is doing the over 40’s and had a good battle on his hands with Fletch until an interference call was made on Fletch. Chris took it out from John Mercer and Craig Robbo.
The battle of the Wormsley clan continued in the Trad. This time it was Craig getting the win.
The new category of the reppacharge worked well and at least gives you another surf if you get knocked out early. Big Lazza Hayes took the win from Nathan Mc Mahon. This was one of Nathan’s 3 finals he surfed in for the day. (Oh to be young again)
Speaking of age, the elder statesman class (over 50’s) has 2 new inductees (Andy Brown and Rod Jemmett) this year. Andy Brown ended up taking out the win over Gus in small conditions.
Junior Boys New member Jack Malone had a good first up win in the over Nathan. Myles and Lachy Fletcher took 3rd and 4th respectively.
With some members away at the Noosa Festival it was a good opportunity to get in some early points in the various divisions. Full results in results section.
Next club comp is April 18th. Meet at Ocean Grove Main Beach 7am.
Don’t forget that we (the SOUL club) are the host for the Longboard Interclub Challenge to be held on the 28-3-09. This will be held between the SOUL, Maladiction, Pt Lonsdale and Surfcoast clubs. Teams will meet at Ocean Grove at 7.30 am on the Saturday Morning. Each club will be represented by 15 surfers and during the day a points system will determine the winning club.
