2008 End of year Preso
How to party like it’s the end of 2008.
Once again the comp season is over for another year. This year there was a total of 7 comps completed and 1 tag team event.
As we all know it wasn’t the best year condition and swell wise, with a couple of comps being called off and one rescheduled. Local Comp surfing is all about surfing in whatever you’ve got and it is not very often pumping well lined up surf.
With everyone being so surf starved I think we all decided to make up for it by curing it with food and drink. Wendy was run off her feet in the kitchen with so many orders and all the kids made short work of their meals too. Well done Wendy. Danny was kept busy at the bar with what seemed to be a constant stream of people ordering refreshments. Thanks to the Golf Club for the use of a great venue.
The SOUL all star band got themselves all set up and started out with a nice quiet acoustic set with the hugely talented Johnny Willard leading the way.
A few DVD’S ran on the screen during the night to really show us how it’s done and to rub in the lack of swell and southerly wind issues were having. One of these was Chooka's 8mm films from the 60’s that have been put on to DVD. This was most enlightening and entertaining for a lot of us as it has great vision of Ocean Grove and surrounds from back then as well as other exotic places like snapper rocks. It also showed how much fun it was to live by the coast back then with being able to have car rallies and all sorts of other things.
Needo put together a power point show using photo’s that both he and I had taken during the year and I think it turned out to be a bit of fun for all.
President Brian got the ball rolling for the presentation part of the night. I don’t think there were any big surprises on the night but some of the classes were very tight usually for the 2nd-4th placing’s. Well done to all who all who “had a crack” during the year and also to those who took home one of the new great looking trophies. Se the results page for all the full run down.
With all the formalities over it was time to let the hair down (for those who have it) and have some fun. A Meatloaf-Esk Glen Emslie certainly did all of that and only needed to belt out Like A Bat Out Of Hell and then scene would have been complete. Herbie, Chris Meier and Guy Werner all joined in with Steve, Johnny, Brownie and Dean from the all stars band and really belted out some great numbers. We’re lucky to have so many great muso's in the club to play at our functions.
We now start thinking of the next season and it looks like it’s already going to be a busy year with our first comp in February and then hosting the Old Mal Titles.
Heres hoping you all have a great Christmas and New Year and we all get a few waves over the break.
