News/November Tag Team2008

Fun for all at final event for 2008

The final event for the year was held at Ocean Grove last Saturday. Greeted by sloppy low tide on- shore conditions the decision was made by competition director Chris Meier to run a tag team event. There were 4 teams of about 12 surfers each. Each team member had to catch 2 waves, then run up the beach and tag the next surfer. This ran for 2 hours and then the teams wave scores added up. Red team captained by Ben Considine won by 3 points from yellow team, white team, and blue team.
Cheating and interference seemed to be encouraged, and blocking tactics by Chad as well as my board being tied to the fence by Rod Jemmitt and Dale were all noted. I thought it was about time that we took safety seriously and donned a hard hat and goggles after having done a JSA (job safety assessment)
All in all it was a good fun day and nice to share in the spirit without the pressure of competition.
One surfer of note for the day was Bill Kelly. Bill was born in Grove in 1948 and competed in the world titles in Sydney in 1964 and again in California in 1965. Look for Bill to make a return next year.
All eyes now turn to the clubs presentation night on November 29 to find out exactly who has finished where. With meals, drinks, live music and good looking trophies on offer a great night is assured.
