Due to Andrew Brown’s absence its Chad Mclauchlan here updating you on the competition that was.
18th of October, the second competition of October was to bring us up to date with our yearly competition agenda.
A magnificent day was put on by Mother Nature and the competition was held at SignPosts on the 13th beach stretch. A glassy and consistent 3ft greeted competitors and as usual an abundance of competitors signed up for their respective divisions. Whilst the grommets made the most of it and ran out for a free surf, most of the other competitors (the old ones) watched and waited patiently while Brian (Bull) Tucker and Chris Meier drew up the heats.
First in the water was the Open B’s and this gave other competitors a chance to laugh at the, what was to be the first of many, wipe outs. With the tide almost dry it was hard going with steep takeoffs and solid sets pulsing through signposts. Nathan McMahon, Sam Sunderman, Myself and Ben Considine managed to scrap through the heaving walls of water to progress through to the final.
The hotly contested over 40s were in the water next and with a growing amount of competitors in this division it was clear that the surfing was going to be close. Fletch’s hard turns back to the foam were noticeable for the judges as was Larry Hayes consistency. The wave selection of Shane “firnsy” Firns gave him the best waves in his heats and Guy Werner stepped it up proving that wave selection and long rides into the shorey were the key.
As the day heated up the infamous mijis from the 13th beach golf course decided to pay a visit and judges found it tough citing the finals. The junior boy’s final was held in some pristine signposts and as the northerly strengthened and the swell groomed, it was looking magnificent. A notable mention must go to Nathan McMahon who took out the juniors and has been surfing solidly in the Open Bs also.
The call was made to adjust the agenda whilst “signies” was firing and the premier event of the SOUL long board club, the Open A final, hit the water. Without a doubt the final belonged to only one man about 10 minutes into the heat. Trent Myers was blowing up and scored high 9s for a 360. With his quick feet, speed and punishing reos, Trent sewed up the Open A final and took the win from the other boys.
Sam Sunderman and Ginny Werner surfed solidly all day. Both girls owned the junior girls final (because they were the only ones in it). Sam spanked the boys in the Open B final as usual and looks to now be the hot contender to take out the Bs this year. Sam also placed ahead of her mum in count back for the women’s final. Ginny placed a credible 3rd in the repechage round and a notable mention must go to Rosie’s flag bearing and wipe-outs to high scoring inside waves, she is beautifully unique.
Good to see the white-water warriors out at the competition also. Lead by the accomplished long boarder and instructor Heather Peck and Lee Considine, both managed to put some smiles on many beginning surfers face.
