1st Oct Comp

Sunny SOUL Comp

We held the first of our 2 comps for the month of October in sunny and mildly warm conditions.

This comp replaced the September one which had to be called off due to poor conditions.

The swell and wind looked promising early in the day, with light offshore winds and a small but consistent ½ metre swell.

A later start of 9am was called to try and get the best of the conditions on offer but as the morning wore on the sea breeze started to kick in. By the time high tide came around at about 2pm, the conditions became very tricky and demanding.

The over 40s continues to be hotly contested, with finalists from one comp not necessarily getting through in the next comp, and other surfers coming through to make finals. Steve Duan surfed well and was rewarded with a good second place. Big Larry Hayes had a good win and must now be close to taking out this division

The A grade surfers put on a good display of how small waves can be ridden with style and flair. Trent Myers was a stand out not only for his surfing ability but also for his bright red wet suit thanks to his new sponsor in Peak Wetsuits. Australia’s number 2 in the over 35s, Dean Cook, placed 3^rd and Chris Meier had a high scoring wave that put him into 2^nd.

Sam Sunderman showed good form to take out the Junior Girls and looks like the one to beat in this section.

Ben Considine had a big day out and surfed in 3 finals. He won the open B section and got third placing’s in both the Jnr Boys and the Traditional sections.

Tim Edwards made the small conditions look easy and showed his usual trad flair on the waves.

A highlight (if you could call it that) was Open B surfer Chad McLauchlan accepting a $10 dare to surf in only his Speedos and rashie. Quite a site. Onlookers were tempted to call Greenpeace until they realised what was going on!
