Saved at Signies
After having to cancel a couple of comps this year it was a relief to turn up at Signies and see that it had the potential to serve up some good waves for the day. With about 80 competitors to get through it was going to need to be good.
This comp was bigger than usual due to the running of the old mal division. We might have created a monster here as the amount of interest shown was huge.
Murf turned up with 4 or 5 boards to make sure any one who wanted to have a go could. Chooka, Raza, Simon, Dale, Tim and many others selected from their quivers (or from the farm shed in some cases) some fine examples of some of our surfing history and also generously made them available to surf on.
With the road signes, tent and PA system all set up it was time to fire up Lazzas BBQ. In no time at all the bacon and eggs were being whipped of the hot plate and ready to sit in your gut for your first heat.
It was great to see a number of new members turn up and brave the cold conditions and have a red hot go in their divisions. Also great to see big Phil in amongst the action after his back opp.
Part time announcer Chris was doing a good job on the PA and was ably assisted with the flag changing by Rosie, Kate and later on by happy Rod. Chad took over on the PA and showed us all that he is very comfortable doing a bit of sprooking and might be a bit of a wiz at karaoke(surfs ok too)
Simon was all set to hit the water when Chooka reminded him that if he was going to surf traditional old mal that a leg rope wasn’t really the done thing. After 2 swims for the board and a near miss by one of the Womersly’s with a floating board it became obvious why they were invented.
The over 40’s, open A and open B categories are all shaping up to be close tussles with different winners and place getters in a few of the comps so far.
Well now it’s on to the mid year function and a good excuse to just have a good catch up with all the people who really are the heart and SOUL (yes, pun intended) of this great club.
