GOLDEN BREED LONGBOARD CLUB CHALLANGE
The Weekend of Challenges!
Finally the weekend that had been talked about for so long had arrived. The Golden Breed Longboard Club Challenge, hosted by the Maladiction club.
Having to travel over to the other side posed its own challenges. To go the day before, or get up and go early on the morning. Most of team SOUL decided to go on Saturday and the township of Flinders was warned of their arrival.
El Presidente Brian, Chris Meier and Rosie (what was she thinking) met at Simon Thorne’s place and sorted out boards and travelling arrangements. Thorny, Craig + Matty Robbo (cant really sat big and little any more) were all loaded up and hit the road too.
With all travellers on the ferry, thoughts turned to getting in sneaky surf at The Pines to get ready for Sunday.
Once back at the caravan park the cabins were found, and all gear stowed, it was time to hit the Pub for a few refreshments and a meal. The beverages after dinner were going down well when the Pub management decided that they needed to close up at about 10.30. Very strange. Obviously they’ve got plenty of money over there and don’t need ours.
The Jemmitt clan had the pleasure of Toby’s company and soon re named him Toby Snorehammer. He’s pretty good apparently. Even kept Wallie, Trent and Matty Hayes awake and they’d had plenty of sleeping potion.
Captain Cook and the boys finally tired them selves out and hit the hay too.
Sunday came around and every one was excited with the forecast of a big swell due to wrap around into Westernport Bay. Upon arrival at the Pines it was obvious that the big swell hadn’t arrived and combined with the low tide, and several hangovers, it was going to take a while for things to improve. Another challenge.
Brownie who had stayed with family at Mc Crae had a hangover as good as the rest thanks to some Swedish Aquavat.
Bretho had an easy drive from home for a change, and reunited himself with the beach and people from his surfing past.
Surfcoast turned up in their bus fresh off the ferry and we were then ready to get underway.
The seeding heats meant that if you finished 3rd in your heat, you then surfed against the other people who finished 3rd, in the competition round. This combined with the small swell created a good atmosphere in the water especially in the seeding heats.
With 10 seeding heats and then another 10 comp heats it was just as well that due to Golden Breeds sponsorship there were plenty of free snags. During the day lucky punters names were called out at random and some great Golden Breed gear was given away.
The last couple of heats were all the number one surfers and they showed just what can be done in small waves.
After a lot of number crunching, Maladictions Mal Stafford read out the results of 3rd place Surfcoast, 2nd place Maladiction and the champs SOUL Longboarders.
